their books, that

L is for Lam, Vincent - Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures
From Amazon:
Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures welcomes readers into a world where the most mundane events can quickly become life or death. By following four young medical students and physicians – Ming, Fitz, Sri and Chen – this debut collection from 2006 Scotiabank Giller Prize winner Vincent Lam is a riveting, eye-opening account of what it means to be a doctor. Deftly navigating his way through 12 interwoven short stories, the author explores the characters’ relationships with each other, their patients, and their careers. Lam draws on his own experience as an emergency room physician and shares an insider’s perspective on the fears, frustrations, and responsibilities linked with one of society’s most highly regarded occupations.
There were mixed feelings among our book club about this book. But those who liked it 'really' liked it. I guess it's one of those books, you'll have to read for yourself to decide.

I enjoy short stories so I will look it up!
ReplyDeleteInteresting "L" choice. I am one of the readers who is standing on the proverbial fence with this novel. Couldn't quite get into it. Hope you are enjoying the Challenge.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm with you, Pat. But not every read is for everyone, like was said earlier. Thanks for stopping in.
DeleteMixed feelings? Really? Who wold have guessed? Not your typical sunny afternoon light read. :)
ReplyDeleteNo it isn't but some really liked it. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI found it to be a very interestingly quirky book. I am very glad I read it, but it is definitely not a warm and fuzzy read. Great choice for "L" and actually coordinates well with my choice for "L", London, which is Vincent Lam's home town.

Thanks Monica. I didn't know that Vincent Lam was a Canadian, much less also from London! Wow
DeleteThanks for stopping by my blog and commenting on my found photos! Your book club picks really diverse books.I'm a librarian (in 2 book clubs though I have to admit I rarely make it to either) and hadn't heard of some of these. In my library's catalog, this book is described as a Canadian best seller, so that might have something to do with it. One of my book clubs is reading "The Year of the Flood" this month so it's not that we totally ignore Canadian authors!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Donna. You gotta get to one of those book clubs. Don't know about yours, but we serve really great h'orderves with wine and great desserts with teas and coffees. All a part of a great book discussion. Glad you're choosing a little Canadian content too. :-)
DeleteFollowing from the A-Z challenge. thanks for the reviews of all these books. I had been wanting to read some of them and you've interested me in others
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind comments. Glad to have interested you in some new authors and books.
